The Phrygian Period ..
In the early 12th century BC, the Hittite Empire was overthrown by the invasion of the sea clans entering Anatolia through the Straits. The Phrygians dominated Ankara and its surroundings. The first king of the Phrygians was Gordias, who gave his name to Gordion. According to the historian Arianos, Gordias married a woman from Thelmessos (Fethiye) and had a son named Midas. Midas is the most known and famous king of the Phrygians who have no definite information about the past. However, according to some researches, it is said that the Phrygians gave their name to all the kings as Midas.
The city of Gordion is located within the boundaries of Polatlı district, which is 76 km away from present-day Ankara.
In the Phrygian tradition, which is described as the foundation of Ankara, King Midas is considered the leader of the establishment of Ankara.
The Lydian traveler Pausanias, who lived in the middle of the second century, gives information about the settlements of Galatians in Anatolia and also mentions Ankara. He tells that Ankara was founded by Midas who was the son of Gordios and that he was a city of Phrygians. Pausanias, who had to make a statement for the name of th
